Enlightenment

Enlightenment

Enlightenment is one of those words that turned me off.  Enlightenment meant being in touch with what God or the Universe desires.  Being an atheist, enlightenment seemed unreal and something people claimed to get followers or feel above others.  My understanding of what enlightenment is has since evolved to a secular understanding.

Now I understand enlightenment as having a constant objective awareness.  When meditating I have experienced enlightenment in moments when my mind is quiet and aware.  There are moments when we all experience enlightenment.  When doing something and being “in the zone” is a moment of enlightenment.  When in the zone we experience a heightened awareness of what we are doing and know the best thing to do at that moment.

I am not enlightened. To constantly be in a space of objective awareness seems as if it would be uncommon but not impossible.  My instinct was to say that being in a state of constant objective awareness would be difficult but difficult seems the wrong descriptor since being in objective awareness is about being at ease.  Enlightenment is being in constant peace.

My mind is not clear.  Random thoughts about the past and future frequently race through my mind keeping me from being in the moment.  However, once we realize we are thinking thoughts not about this moment, we are practicing awareness and are back in the moment.  Ego is another obstacle in the path of enlightenment.  Egos are not objective; they see through the prism of self.

Being in the moment and objective is a practice.  Meditation is a tool to practice being in the moment.  When meditating, focus is on the breath.  However, other thoughts pass through while meditating, notice, then return focus to breath.  It is a practice.

Objectivity is also a practice.  I practice noting the facts without applying ego.  When someone cuts me off in traffic, I used to become upset thinking, “Why is that jerk so inconsiderate?!!!”  However, when applying objectivity to the situation, anger does not enter or quickly dissipates.  Perhaps the person is a jerk, but maybe they are rushing their injured pet to the vet, or just learned their spouse was in a serious accident and are rushing to the hospital to be with them.  We don’t know why the person cut us off in traffic.  We just know they cut us off.  Knowing the reason why they cut us off can change the way we feel.  That is because we are applying a layer of ego to the situation.  If why they cut us off makes a difference in how we feel, we can practice objectivity and even if they are being a jerk, we have the ability to not react as if our ego were being attacked.

My hope is that we may let go of ego, be in the moment, and practice objectivity.  I wish you peace or in other words, I wish you enlightenment.
